Project Description
Access to marine infrastructure has a very real impact on every person, business and industry in Nunavut. Nunavut’s lacking marine infrastructure is severely limiting our ability to access resources, contribute to economic wealth and Arctic sovereignty, and protect and promote Nunavut’s natural beauty and resources.
The Hamlet of Qikiqtarjuaq, with support from QC and QBDC, has been actively advocating for a deep sea port in their community. A port in Qikiqtarjuaq will support the needs of northern marine trade corridors in particular as the Northwest passage opens and Arctic marine traffic increases. The port will increase northern vessel safety and services and will support the growing northern fisheries, tourism and trade industries.
Over the past 20 years the Municipality, QC, and the Territorial and Federal Governments have all independently recognized the need and opportunity for a port in Qikiqtarjuaq and each has progressed various feasibility studies and assessments.
Most recently, QBDC and the Municipality led the development of a comprehensive funding proposal to design and construct a 90 metre fixed wharf and supporting infrastructure in Qikiqtarjuaq.
