Project Info

Location: Sanikiluaq, Nunavut

Lead: Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation

Benefits:

  • Local training and long-term employment
  • Reduce reliance on fossil fuels

Project Description

Sanikiluaq is 100 percent dependent on fossil fuel. The community of 900 consumes four million litres of fossil fuel annually for heating, transportation and electricity.

NNC installed a meteorological tower in March 2017 to quantify the wind resource in Sanikiluaq. The results showed a very impressive wind resource ideal for wind energy.

NNC has designed a 1,000 kW small scale wind turbine and 500 kW of battery energy storage. This platform is anticipated to displace 50% of the diesel fuel used annually for community electricity generation.

The proposed turbine technology is specifically designed for Arctic and remote deployment. The turbines are easy to install with equipment locally available.

The project is advancing through a regional-community ownership model. This ownership structure enables the community to lead the project and it maximizes local social and economic benefits while easing barriers to project financing.

In 2023, NNC and Qulliq Energy Corporation signed an Energy Purchase Agreement for the project, the first of it’s kind in Nunavut.
